Admissions Policy
Kindergarten & First Grade
Open to any child in the State of Louisiana, ISL seeks students from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds who will benefit from its challenging academic program. Admission is based on a lottery system which takes into account a required percentage of at risk students.
Admission Procedures
To enter kindergarten, children should be 5 years old by September 30th. To enter first grade, children should be 6 years old by September 30th.
Completed applications are entered into a random lottery. Once the random drawing takes place, those chosen are notified by mail. The registration process is then initiated. A school-administered developmental observation will be scheduled and used to determine kindergarten readiness. First graders will also be administered an academic readiness assessment.
Applications not chosen in the lottery will be placed on the waiting list. Students who have already been admitted do not need to reapply in following years.
Siblings of ISL students must advance through the standard registration procedure, which includes timely submission of a completed ISL application packet and successful completion of a school-administered kindergarten or first grade assessment. Siblings will be offered a space based on these requirements, and will not be placed in the lottery.
Students who withdraw from school and subsequently wish to return are subject to the same admissions requirements as new incoming students with regard to language fluency.
ISL does not discriminate on the basis of intellectual or athletic ability, status as a handicapped person, or any other basis that would be illegal if used by a district board of education. ISL complies with all Louisiana statutes concerning public schools.
