Featured Testimonial

“The cultural experiences my son has had at ISL cannot be matched, and his education is as well rounded as any, anywhere. To me the International School of Louisiana is a microcosm of all that is good in New Orleans, and one of the major factors in my family’s decision to stay in New Orleans post-Katrina. I can give it no higher endorsement.”

1. Does my child need to speak French or Spanish to enter Kindergarten or First Grade?

NO! The program is designed for non-French & non-Spanish speakers. The overwhelming majority of students entering the program in kindergarten and first grade have little or no prior language experience.

2. Does my child need to speak French or Spanish to enter Second Grade or any subsequent grade?

Yes, beyond the first grade level students seeking admittance need to pass an entrance evaluation in the language program for which they are seeking admittance. They are expected to be proficient in French or Spanish appropriate to their grade level and their reading, writing, oral proficiency and math skills will be tested.

3. How do I register my child for school?

Our registration process begins with an application for admission. Applications are available on the applications page of our website or you may pick one up at our campus.

Applications for each academic year will become available during the Fall preceding the year to which you are seeking admittance.  Children should be five years of age by September 30th in order to enter Kindergarten and six years of age by September 30th to enter 1st Grade.

8. When is the application deadline?

The Kindergarten deadline is January 29, 2010 and the Kindergarten Lottery will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010.

Siblings of current ISL students seeking admission for Kindergarten have a deadline of January 5, 2010.

The deadline for Grades 1- 8 is Wednesday, March 26, 2010 for siblings and non-siblings alike.

9. What happens after I turn in my Kindergarten application?

Completed applications are entered into a random lottery. The first name drawn after all of the spaces in all Kindergarten classes have been filled will become the first child on the wait list and so forth until all of the names have been selected. Parents are then notified by mail and informed of whether they placed in a class or on the wait list. School administered developmental assessments will be scheduled and used to determine kindergarten readiness for those who placed in a class.

10. What happens after I turn in my application for First Grade?

Completed applications for the first grade will be entered into a lottery to determine the order in which we will test for available spaces. An entrance assessment will be administered to determine academic & developmental readiness.  The assessment is conducted in English.

11. What happens after I turn in my application for Grades 2- 8?

Applicants who have a completed application on file will be provided with a testing date after the Grades 2-8 deadline. Applicants will have their oral fluency, reading, writing & math skills assessed in either French or Spanish. For those grades in which we have more successful test takers than we do available spaces, we will hold a lottery.

12. Will you consider a child who has an incomplete application?

No, children with incomplete applications will not be entered in a lottery or be placed on the waitlist for any grade. We are unable to make copies of the required documents that accompany the application in our office.

13. Do I need to be an Orleans Parish resident to apply?

No, ISL is a state chartered public school open to any resident living in Louisiana. If you have not yet moved to Louisiana, you are eligible to apply but will have to provide proof of residency before your child can be enrolled.
