Charter Schools
Across the United States groups of parents, educators, and community members have created public schools known as charter schools. For the most part, the impetus for these schools is to create a flexible, innovative school environment.
ISL was Louisiana’s first language immersion charter school and is the only Louisiana school to be named a “Charter School of the Year” by the Center for Education Reform, the nation’s leading education advocacy organization.
International School of Louisiana (ISL):
- ISL is an independent charter school operating under the authority and approval of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).
- ISL must participate in Louisiana’s testing program and is required to meet student achievement standards.
- ISL is organized as a nonprofit corporation and is governed by its own board of trustees within the framework agreed to in the charter granted by BESE.
Charter Schools in Louisiana:
- Evidence suggests that charter schools perform, on average, better than regular public schools.
- Both students and employees are at a charter school by choice.
- Louisiana’s charter school law specifically requires that any charter school serve at least the same percentage of low-income students as is in the public schools of the parish where the charter operates.
